W12 Reflection
Based on the "What's a Business For?" article from the W12 Study: Becoming a Change-Maker activity, respond to the following questions:
1. Based on what you read in the first two pages (pages 3 and 4), why
are virtue and integrity so vital to an economy?
If
I am understanding the article correctly, the reason virtue and integrity are
so vital to the economy is because when an entrepreneur has integrity and virtue,
they are more likely to look after their employees. When virtue and integrity
are thrown out the window the entrepreneur only cares about their own
personal success and wealth. In business if we have virtue and integrity, we
have a desire to make a community with our employees were everyone can have
financial growth and success. This desire to "spread virtue and integrity
to everyone" has a rippling effect that trickles down through even the lower-level
employees. This allows room for them to grow and progress in their jobs. When
there is virtue and integrity, the wealth and resources in our country have a
greater opportunity for production and consumption across the board. This
allows for growth and progress for everyone and decreases the poor and needy
when we look out for one another.
2. According to Charles Handy, what is the “real justification” for the
existence of businesses?
According
to Charles Handy the "real justification" for the existence of
businesses is for the business to become profitable in a way that would allow
the business to do something bigger and greater. It is not for personal gain
but to make the world a better place.
3. What are two solutions proposed by Handy that you agree with? Why?
The
two solutions proposed by Handy that I agree with are:
1.
"A good business is a community with a purpose, and a community is
not something to be “owned.”
I agree with this
because I believe it is important to create a community within the walls
of a business. This allows everyone to feel valued and needed. We all desire to
know that what we do makes a difference in the world and that what we are doing
every day is being noticed. Creating a community in the workplace helps
everyone feel included. This also allows the employee to have a good balance
between life and work.
2.
"We should, as charitable organizations do, measure success
in terms of outcomes for others as well as for ourselves."
I also agree with
this because when look to be a charitable company we are bringing good and love
to those around us. A company may choose to be charitable by helping local
veterans get back on their feet when returning home. Also, donating some of the
proceeds to a water source that brings fresh water to areas that do not have
access to it. It is good to be charitable and find ways to help the environment
by cleaning up in our communities and neighborhoods.
